Man alive, there are so many things to want. This glorious pair of Nike Air Max 1 are currently my most desired item, more desired than Dark Chocolate Mint M & M’s. I figured that at 30 weeks pregnant, investing in good, solid footwear is the responsible thing to do, you know, for the sake of health and stuff. They are currently available from Shelflife in Red, Royal Blue and Black. Pics via: Shelflifestore.
I have always been a tracksuit pants and t shirt kinda gal, but now that im a grown-ass, married woman, Im feeling like it would be marvelous to trade in my current buggered up look for something a little more elegant – I’m sure Mr Bird will also appreciate the upgrade from exhausted, over washed, over snuggled tracksuit to a more elegant, sexy lady kind of get up.
Our local gals are producing some really really lovely options, these are my favourites…
BENA is a brand run by sisters Xan and Charlie. Xan has the cutest little babe Sienna who is the inspiration behind the brand. Fabrics are soft and cosy and cuts are elegant and simple. They have offerings for both moms and babes, as well as a couple of snuggly blankets and beanies for the little ones. I think Babybird is definitely going to be rocking these little rabbit ears this winter.
Anna-Louise Sleepwear has been around for a while now, they offer a really gorgeous range for the entire family as well as the most beautiful bridal range. I absolutely love their PJ’s. Every season they offer really rad, unusual prints they also offer a service where you can get bespoke PJ’s, gowns and eye masks made for your bridal party – I love this.
They are also one of the only local PJ brands with an offering for guys. Now you can rock your mornings Posh and Becks style and deck out the whole family.
MAISON NOIR COLLECTION
Maison Noir Collection is a new (and very stylish) kid on the block. Roelene has put heaps of time into her fabric selection, as well as the design of this range and its clearly evident. I feel like Scarlett O’Hara would totally wear Maison Noir PJ’s. I plan on swanning around the Maternity ward in one of her gowns, I might still be wearing my worn out, washed out tracksuit pants underneath, but at least I will look like a fancy mama on the outside!
– Find them on Facebook – Maison Noir Collection.
Now that we have been settled in our new home for nearly a year, we have done all the big stuff, all the boring stuff and all the irritating stuff, we can finally get down to the exciting stuff. It is the small stuff that makes a house a home, and man, I am seriously lusting after the small stuff…
Current items that are all the way at the top of #thebirdhouse wishlist…
1. This glorious cactus and belly basket (Basket R380 Simplyhome) 2. Hoi Ploy Brass Bureau Lamp R2999 3. Pedersen and Lennard Deluxe shelving system 4. Edna by Sofa Company
So as you may or may not know, I am currently hurtling along the 40 week journey that is baking a tiny human! Last week I suddenly woke up to the realisation that I have a mere 16 weeks left to get my ducks (who are currently scattered all over the show) into a neat and tidy row, and all this while having a full blown nervous breakdown about the fact that I am actually going to be responsible for another human’s life – the strangest feeling ever!
First in my list of duck wrangling, is getting my house in order. Enter Sweep South – a company I had no idea even existed, and one I plan on getting to know very, very well.
In a nut shell, Sweep South are a company of efficient, cleaning ninjas who are a simple click away. No contracts, no full time commitment no strings attached, basically they are the Uber of cleaning companies. You log on, you select when and where you would like cleaned and, like magic, they arrive!
When it comes to rates, I was pretty impressed. They charge roughly R38 per hour or R190 for the day, something I would happily pay to have a chore free Saturday. Their service is a basic one – they sweep, dust, wipe, clean dishes, vacuum, fold away the clothes you have been meaning to put away forever and do other basics (all listed on their site here). Extra tasks that are not included in the basic service (cleaning the oven is my absolute worst!):
Another nifty feature of theirs is their gift voucher tab. How rad to gift an expectant mom a whole lot of Sweep South Vouchers for her first few weeks of being a mom? You would literally be their best person in the entire world (or so I’m told).
What I like best is that they are not a strictly monday-friday operation. I love that I can have a rowdy group of gals around on a weekend, have a braai, use all the plates, pots and pans (no matter what I try I will always be that girl who cooks with every item in the kitchen) and know that the next day, a lovely cleaning ninja will arrive and take all my problems away so that I can relax and enjoy what people have been telling me, are the last free weekends of my entire life (Parents can be so dramatic!).
Because I am such a nice lady I am giving you lot a little treat, click on this here link, book a house clean with Sweep South and we will give you the first hour FREE!
Yesterday was our first taste of summer, I woke up with sunshine streaming through my window and thought about how awesome it feels putting your toes into the warm sand of Camps Bay Beach. What struck me next was the panicky feeling of oh sh*t, summer is coming, bikini time is coming, PUT DOWN THE DELICIOUS NACHOS!
I am seriously addicted to crunchy things, the biggest offender is those insanely delicious Nacho chips, and fruit chutney Nik Naks, and Sea Salt & Black Pepper kettle chips, the list goes on. I was happily munching on one of these tasty offenders last week when the thought struck me, there is very little healthy food with crunch. Except celery but seriously, no one enjoys eating that. So when the urge for crunch comes along, my natural reaction is to grab the closest chip. This needs to change.
I was making apple pie nougat at the shop last week and I accidentally burnt the hell out of my apple rings, I let them cool before tossing them to avoid melting my dustbin and noticed when I picked them up that they broke with a serious crunch. This had to be explored.
I went home, bought a bag of apple rings, tossed them with a tablespoon of Olive Oil and sprinkled a pinch of Maldon Sea Salt over them. I then proceeded to bake them at 100 degrees for 1,5 hours. I took them out of the oven, let them cool and do you know what I discovered? The crunchiest, most delicious snack in all the land.
2 packets of Apple Wedges (I use the Pink Lady ones from Woolies)
1,5 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Maldon Sea Salt
Put all the ingredients into a bowl, toss them about until everything is evenly distributed and bang your apples into the oven at 100 C for about 2 hours. Let them cool completely before you eat them.
* Put the apples into an air-tight container as soon as they have cooled or they will go all chewy (which is also delicious!)
A few weeks ago I instagrammed a pic of my glorious new Liquido Yoga pants that my Mother-in-law sent me all the way from Australia. So many of you ooooh’d, aaaah’d over them and then booed them for being impossible to purchase locally. Well, dear Yogis, runners, gym goers and just general lovers of wild ass pants, it’s your lucky day! They are now available in South Africa! Ali from Coconut Activewear is bringing in a massive range of colours and psychedelic patterns for you to choose from. Visit their Facebook page here.
Today I am bringing you part 2 of my great Pickle extravaganza. These Zucchini Noodle Pickles are super tasty, the dash of turmeric gives them a glorious, bright colour and an interesting flavour that I think you will really enjoy.
They are not just great in salads and on Sandwiches, I often tangle them up with a pile of regular old Zucchini noodles and eat them with a beautifully baked piece of Salmon. Simple and delicious.
Many of you asked via Instagram/twitter where I got this kick ass little accessory – please click through here and get yourself one today. I noodle everything and anything that can fit through the top of this badboy, occasionally my finger goes through there too. not kiff.
1 Large Onion
1.5 Cup Spirit vinegar
0.5 Cup water
3 x 500ml WECK jars or other jars are fine I suppose!
– Start by either Noodling or chopping up your Zucchinis and chucking them into a bowl. Cut your onion into fine rings and add them to the pile. Cover the veg with cold water and put in the freezer for 30 min. (This will help your veggies to maintain their glorious crunch – no one likes a soggy noodle.)
– Take your cool veg out of the freezer and drain completely.
– Distribute them evenly amongst your 3 jars (pack them in nice and tight).
– Pour your hot pickling liquid over the Zucchini ribbons until they are completely submerged. Make sure you distribute all the peppercorns, bay leaves etc amongst all the jars so that 1 jar doesn’t have all the pizzazz.
– Put the lids on and LEAVE TO COOL COMPLETELY. it is so tempting to try them before but you have to wait until all that goodness has seeped in.
