Lexibird vs. Youdao Translate (有道翻译)

Youdao Translate (有道翻译) comes from NetEase Youdao, the company behind one of China's most popular dictionaries. Many students use it to read English papers, check grammar, and polish their writing, and its newer AI translation runs on Youdao's own large language models.

Lexibird is aimed at a different routine: the emails, files, screenshots, and calls that cross languages at work. You choose between the Claude, GPT, and Gemini model families, keep your terminology in shared glossaries, and work in an app your whole team can use in their own language.

What is Lexibird?

Lexibird is an AI translator for professionals and teams. It translates text in more than 200 languages, works with documents, screenshots, and recordings, and keeps a dictionary and glossaries close at hand. It runs on the web, on Mac and Windows, and as an extension for Chromium browsers, with an interface available in 30 languages.

What is Youdao Translate (有道翻译)?

Youdao Translate (有道翻译) is NetEase Youdao's translation service. Its web translator offers AI translation, human translation, and a combined AI-plus-human option, along with document and web page translation, arXiv paper translation, audio and video translation, and writing tools for grammar correction and native-level polishing. Its AI translation is built on Youdao's Ziyue (子曰) models, and it also has a desktop app and an enterprise edition.

1. Leading AI models for real-world messages

Youdao has invested heavily in its own translation models, tuned for education and academic text. Lexibird gives you leading AI models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, the same model families many people already rely on for writing and research, and you can switch between them for any translation.

Context is where that pays off. A Chinese colleague who closes a message with "请多指教" isn't literally asking you to "please instruct me more"; they mean "I'd welcome your feedback." Going the other way, "it's a long shot" should become 希望不大 in Chinese, not a phrase about shooting. When the first result doesn't sound like you, try another model and keep the better version.

2. Room for long documents and messages

Youdao's web translator box takes up to 5,000 characters at a time. Lexibird takes up to 20,000 characters per translation, so a long contract clause, a full project update, or a chapter of a report goes through in one pass with its context intact.

Whole files work too. Lexibird's document translation handles PDFs, Word documents, presentations, and spreadsheets in batches, keeps their layout, and deletes uploads after 24 hours.

3. Glossaries the whole team shares

Academic translation tools help one person read one paper. Work translation needs the same terms used by everyone: product names, legal phrases, a client's preferred wording.

In Lexibird, those go into a glossary shared across your team workspace. Every text translation in the web and desktop apps follows it, and because the model sees the terms as context, it builds a natural Chinese or English sentence around them. Your team in Hangzhou and your colleagues in Toronto get the same wording without comparing notes.

4. Screenshots, recordings, and the screen in front of you

Plenty of what needs translating never arrives as text. Lexibird reads text in images and screenshots, from a WeChat conversation to a photo of a shipping label, and translates it. Recorded calls and voice notes can be transcribed, then translated. On a Mac or Windows PC, you can capture a region of your screen to translate a menu or error message you can't copy.

5. Privacy for business conversations

For teams sharing contracts and customer details, Lexibird's Business plan includes zero data retention, turned on by default, so translations only go to AI providers that don't store them. Single sign-on with SAML or OIDC lets IT manage access alongside your other tools.

Which one should you choose?

If you're a student reading English papers and polishing assignments, Youdao Translate (有道翻译) and its study tools are a strong companion.

For translation at work, choose Lexibird if you want:

  • Claude, GPT, and Gemini models that capture meaning and tone, not just words
  • Long texts and whole documents in one pass
  • Glossaries your whole team shares
  • An app your colleagues can use in their own language, with zero data retention for sensitive work

Try Lexibird with your next email to a partner in China and compare how it reads.
