If you already use DeepL, wording matters to you: a contract clause that reads naturally, a product email that doesn't sound machine-made. Lexibird is built for the same reader. Both translate text and documents, support glossaries, and come with desktop apps, browser extensions, and team accounts.
The difference is what powers the translation and how much of your multilingual work happens in one place. DeepL runs every request through its own proprietary models. Lexibird lets you pick from leading AI models by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, and puts text, documents, images, audio, a dictionary, and glossaries side by side.

What is Lexibird?
Lexibird is an AI translator that lets you decide which model does the work: Claude, GPT, Gemini, or Auto. Writers, professionals, and teams use it for text in more than 200 languages and for the screenshots, recordings, and files that come with everyday multilingual work.
What is DeepL?
DeepL is a translation service built on proprietary models that it develops specifically for translation. It offers text and document translation, glossaries, desktop apps, and browser extensions, along with business features such as translation memory, an API, and DeepL Voice for live multilingual meetings.
1. You choose the model behind each translation
DeepL gives you one engine. Lexibird gives you a choice of AI models from the Claude, GPT, and Gemini families, or an Auto option that picks for you. Premium models are available on paid plans.
That choice matters most on text where meaning depends on context. Take a German product update that says a feature request "ist nicht unser Bier." A word-for-word translation leaves you with something about beer. A large language model reads the sentence around it and writes "isn't our call" or "falls outside our scope," depending on the tone of the rest of the message. If one model's phrasing doesn't fit, you can run the same text through another and compare.
2. Glossaries that shape the whole sentence
Both products support glossaries. In Lexibird, glossaries work whenever you translate text on the web or in the desktop app. They reach the AI model as context, so it can build a natural sentence around a product name or defined term instead of swapping words after the fact.
Say your team calls its main feature "Workbench" and never wants it translated as "workshop" or "desk." Add it once, and everyone in your team workspace gets the same result. If you already maintain a term list in a spreadsheet or a TMX file, import it instead of starting over.
3. More than text in one app
A lot of multilingual work doesn't arrive as clean text. A customer sends a voice message, a supplier sends a scanned invoice, or a colleague shares a screenshot of an error dialog in Korean.
Lexibird handles all of those in one place. You can transcribe a recording and translate the transcript, run OCR on an image, or capture a region of your screen from the desktop app. Dictation, read-aloud, and a dictionary with transliteration sit right alongside. For files, document translation takes PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and XLIFF files up to 40 MB and keeps the layout intact.
DeepL Voice is built for live meetings and conversations, which Lexibird doesn't offer. Lexibird is aimed at the recordings, images, and files that land in your inbox.
4. Translation where you already work
Say you're answering a French customer in your help desk tool. Copy their message, press the Lexibird shortcut, and the desktop app opens from the menu bar (or the system tray on Windows) with the translation ready, without you leaving the ticket. On the web, a Chromium browser extension does the same for text you select on a page and shows the result in a side panel.
5. Privacy controls for teams
Teams get shared workspaces with admin and member roles. On the Business plan, Lexibird adds single sign-on with SAML or OIDC and zero data retention, which is on from the start.
Picture a legal team translating a draft NDA. Lexibird hands that text only to AI providers that don't store it. If none of them can take the request, the team sees an error, never a quiet switch to a provider that would keep a copy. The rule holds whether someone translates in the web app, the desktop app, or the browser extension.
Which one should you choose?
DeepL makes sense if your workflow depends on translation memory, its API, or live meeting translation.
Choose Lexibird if you want:
- A second opinion on hard passages, by running the same paragraph through Claude, GPT, and Gemini
- Idioms and tone handled by models that read the whole message, with a formal or informal switch
- Screenshots, recordings, and files in the same window as your text
- Glossaries your whole team shares, plus zero data retention on Business
Try Lexibird on your next tricky email or document and compare the result for yourself.
